English Schools Cross Country Championships

Schools | 16th March 2025

This year celebrated the 100th English Schools Championships and was held at a fast and challenging course in Ardingley.

Starting off the day were the intermediate girls. A fast and furious start saw the girls squeezed into the middle of the pack, but they worked through well finish strongly. The twins Mia and Ava came through as our first 2 scorers in 67th and 70th with Evie, Poppy, Francesca and Julia finishing well to place us as the 11th team overall. Uma and Anna weren't far beind and the team ended up winning the team trophy for the best 8 scorers! A great team effort from the girls!

Next up, the junior boys also finished in 11th place as a team, thanks to strong runs from Jonah (49th) and Luca (60th), backed up by Wilf, Luke, Lewis, Archie, Justin and Austin. This was quickly followed by excellent runs by Katharina (44th), Amber (45th) and Freya (74th) in the Junior Girls. Aoife, Isla, Millie, Bethany and Freya completed the team to finish 25th overall.

The intermediate boys had a very strong showing, finishing 5th overall thanks to an excellent run from Casper who couldn't quite hold on to the lead group but finished strongly to take 13th place. Next in was Niraj (43rd) who worked his way brilliantly through the field after a slow start, and Travis (49th), both bottom of the age group with lots of potential for next year. They were followed in by Ethan (86th), Oakley, Edward, Sebastian and Oscar.

The penultimate race of the day was the senior girls with another strong team finishing 8th overall. Running a brilliant race in her first year as a senior, Immi finished 14th closely followed in by Eva (44th), Flo (46th) and Chloe (86th). Eve, Isobella, Ela and Charlotte also finished strongly to win the same team trophy as the inter girls for the best 8 scorers!

The final race of the day promised to be a thriller and didn't disappoint. Despite a few of the team missing due to injury, there was still a lot of expectation on our senior boys. An incredibly gutsy run from Owen strung out the field from the off, as he went out fast in the lead. Having raced many of the other boys this year he knew he had to make a long run for home and try to take the kick out of them if he wanted to win. Unfortunately, he didn't quite have enough to hold on to the lead, crossing the finish line with a throughly well deserved bronze medal! This was backed up by great run from Jon (21st) and Will (34th) both in the first year in the age group, closely followed by Jacob (52nd), Archie (83rd), Oliver, Stanley and Harris. Overall, the boys claimed 3rd in the team title, an agonising 1 point behind Surrey, but still very much deserved for their efforts!

A massive congratulations to all who competed and a huge thank you to all of the team managers, in particular Amy for all of the organisation behind the scenes! We now look forward to the Track and Field Championships in the summer!
