Hampshire Cross Country League
The league season runs from October to February and comprises five races in Hampshire and neighbouring counties.
Firstly, huge thanks to Dave and the Salisbury team who worked so hard to put on yesterday's fixture in atrocious weather. Secondly, thanks to all officials who again stood out in the weather to make the fixture happen. Please note, if you have either an Individual or Team prize to come (U20, Combined and Veterans) these are to presented at the League AGM. We would appreciate either the athlete themselves or a representative from your club to come to that meeting.
I have a plea, despite numerous calls on the PA system: I am still missing positions 48 and 51 from the U15 Girls' race. I cannot identify or name the athletes. Their efforts cannot be noted and also, I don't have the number tickets, which is annoying because I will have to make new ones if they are not returned. If you know who these two athletes are, please let me know, with a contact if possible, then I may acknowledge their participation in the race today, and hopefully get my numbers back!
A small Skin's top (definitely a small junior size) was found on Hudson's Field after the last match. The boot bag, trainers and spikes that were also found have been claimed by their owner.
Please contact Karen Mundell (City of Salisbury A & RC) if this item belongs to you.
Popplewell Trophy 2014
We have now come to the end of our league season and it is time for you to make your nomination for the Popplewell Trophy.
The Trophy was purchased by monies donated by league clubs in acknowledgement of the many years' work by Maureen and John Popplewell in establishing the league to its current strength.
The Trophy will be presented for outstanding achievement and to any person involved in the League:- runners, team managers, officials and organisers (not committee members).
|Previous winners:-||2011||Alan Coveney||Winchester & District AC|
|2012||Tim Richardson||Reading AC|
|2013||David Vosser||Winchester & District AC (see below)|
I regret that I have to report that there have been incidents at league events which the committee consider to be unsporting and against the spirit of Cross Country as well infringing UKA rules.
At the first event at Reading a junior runner was paced by a fellow club member for a large part of the course. When questioned the pacer was unaware that his conduct could have led to the club mate being disqualified.
Whilst we all like to see competitors receiving support we ask all team managers and coaches to remind their members not to act as pace makers.
At Bournemouth a coach was seen running alongside his runner for some distance giving instructions.
We consider this completely against the spirit of the sport and infringing UKA rule 21(a) and in the future will lead to any competitor coached in this manner to be disqualified from the race.
Match 5 - Salisbury
Match 4 - Bournemouth
Match 3 - Popham Airfield
Paul Hammond took more than 6300 photos at the match at Popham.
All photos here are free to download for personal use. However, so many people have offered to pay for the free photos that Paul takes at events, you might like to make a donation to a charity of his choice: http://www.justgiving.com/photosfromhammy
If you want to download the photos, please do. If you use Paul's photos, please credit him. Thank you.
Match 2 - Goodwood
J-P Bisson from Guernsey Island AAAC braved the conditions to take some photos of the action, mostly featuring Channel Islands athletes but obviously showing other runners as well. As ever, we appreciate the time, effort and expense that they put in to attend our county fixtures.
Popplewell Trophy presented to David Vosser
The winner of the Trophy for the season 2012/13 is David Vosser of Winchester and District AC. David was presented with the Trophy at the first of this season's fixtures in Reading on October 19th by the League Chairman, Ken Littlejohns. A worthy recipient of the Trophy, his citation reads:
"Dave Vosser has had a long involvement with the Hampshire League. During the many years that he was with Overton Harriers he consistently turned out for the club and when he became Men's Team Captain ensured a good turnout from Overton in League meetings.
"Since moving to Winchester, his emphasis has changed and he has moved into coaching with good success at League fixtures with the younger age groups. He encourages the athletes he coaches to participate in League fixtures whenever possible. I believe Dave thoroughly deserves the nomination for this prestigious award."
