Hampshire Cross Country League
The league season runs from October to February and comprises five races in Hampshire and neighbouring counties.
Many thanks to Ian and his team at Bournemouth; apart from the biting cold the meeting seemed to go well and I understand a big thumbs up for the new course.
A moan from me, and I'm sure from Alan too, the results envelopes have really got to be brought to us as soon as all athletes are in, especially today when we were calculating both Individual and Team results for presentation. It really makes our job more difficult and only penalises the athletes at the end of the day, if they are denied prizes due to someone holding on to the envelopes.
I had two pieces of lost property handed to me at the end of the day, found at the Start line. If either piece is yours and you can describe it to me, I will make an effort to return it to you.

Under 11 Boys' and Girls' results
As last year, the presentation of the Under 20 and all Senior categories will take place at the League AGM. The date for the AGM is 12 June, subject to confirmation of the venue at River Park Leisure Centre, Winchester. Once results have been confirmed, would all winners in the Under 20 and Senior categories either attend the AGM themselves, or send a representative to collect the trophy on their behalf.
Invitation to clubs to host fixtures for 2015/16 season
We are inviting clubs to express an interest in hosting one of our fixtures for the season 2015/16. If your club feels that they can host a fixture, would a representative attend the AGM with details please. Winchester have already asked to host the October fixture at Farley Mount. We are hoping that clubs that already host will continue to, but new venues/host clubs will be considered. If your club is also willing to stage an Under 11 race, separate from the League structure, would you declare that at the same time.

Popplewell Trophy 2015
We have now come to the end of our league season and it is time for you to make your nomination for the Popplewell Trophy.
The trophy was purchased by monies donated by league clubs in acknowledgement of the many years' work by Maureen and John Popplewell in establishing the league to its current strength.
The trophy will be presented for outstanding achievement and to any person involved in the League: runners, team managers, officials and organisers (not committee members).

Note: Club colours
A request from the Referee to all Team Managers please, make sure that your athletes are all wearing correct club colours. It would appear that some athletes haven't been.
Annual General Meeting - 13 June 2014
The Annual General Meeting of the Hampshire Cross-Country League took place at the River Park Leisure Centre, Winchester on Friday 13 June:
Amendment to the League Constitution
Following the AGM, the following amendment was proposed:
Amendment to Rule with regard to the participation of Under 13 athletes for both Boys and Girls in the Hampshire Cross Country League
- The lower age for Under 13 athletes is for those who have their 11th birthday between 1st September in the year of competition (2014 for the coming season) and 31st August the following year (2015).
- The upper age for Under 13 athletes remains per the current UKA rule (under 13 on the 31st August 2014).
Only 5 votes were received on this amendment, all in favour, and the amendment is therefore carried.
List of athletes competing in the League
Clubs are requested to submit a list of athletes likely to compete in the League by 30 September. The aim is to improve the quality of the results (spelling of names and age group for veterans) and ease the task of the results secretaries.
The information required for each athlete is:
- Sex (this is not obvious with some names!)
- Date of Birth
- Age Group
Clearly there will always be a few athletes not on the list (joined the club halfway through the season, changed their mind about competing, etc) and there is no intention to prevent them from competing.
The list can be sent either to me or to Pam (or separate male and female lists to both).
Generally speaking, we would rather have a list of 50 athletes, of whom only 10 compete, than the other way round!
Popplewell Trophy 2014
The Committee of the Destination Basingstoke Hampshire Cross Country League decided to award the Popplewell Trophy to Graeme Lowndes, in recognition of his contribution to Cross Country running for the League and the County. This was a unanimous decision.
As we all know, Graeme has been involved in Cross Country since the 1980's and was one of the organisers of the Farley Mount fixture with Alan Coveney. He was a team manager for one of the Hampshire teams at Inter-County and National level, was County President in 2011 and had taken athletes to Coutances and Bolbec for competitions for over 25 years. He also instigated the Popplewell Trophy, contacting clubs and organising the collection of funds to purchase the trophy. He nominated Alan Coveney as the first recipient.
His wife Irene attended the AGM along with their two daughters Emily and Lauren and other family members. She asked especially that the trophy be awarded at the meeting, as she felt that it would be too overwhelming to attend the Farley Mount fixture, with all its memories.
On accepting the trophy, Irene said that Graeme would have been surprised, delighted and honoured, as he felt that he had done nothing special. Such was the man.
